"Chess for Every Child" - Empowering Egypt's Underprivileged Children Through Chess
Egypt- Cairo
Chess for Every Child is a grassroots social initiative led by Mahmoud Roushdi, a FIDE-certified trainer and Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering, aiming to empower underprivileged children in Egypt's slums through the game of chess. With over five years of dedicated community service, the project brings structured chess education to children in orphanages, impoverished schools, youth centers, and among refugee and autistic communities.
Rooted in the philosophy of "Pay it Forward," the project uses chess as a transformative tool to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and social inclusion. Activities include regular lessons, teacher training, friendly tournaments, and outreach events. Strategic partnerships—such as with The Gift of Chess—have enabled the distribution of over 1,000 chess sets, helping to build sustainable local networks of chess educators.
Mahmoud plays multiple roles as coach, teacher, coordinator, and organizer, working in collaboration with institutions like the National Council for Childhood and Motherhood and the Police Sector to expand the program’s reach and social impact. Notable events include the Second Republic Championship for School Chess 2024 and special training sessions for children of injured and martyred Egyptian police officers.
By targeting marginalized youth, Chess for Every Child builds not only chess skills but also confidence, community engagement, and a vision for a brighter future.
