Chess for Freedom: Africa's First In-Person Workshop & Championship Set for May 11-14, 2025

The International Chess Federation (FIDE), in collaboration with The Gift of Chess, Dadaz Chess Academy, the Malawi Prison Service, the Malawi Chess Federation, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Malawi), proudly announces the 2025 Chess for Freedom Continental Chess Championship and Workshop for Africa. Marking a milestone as the first in-person Chess for Freedom event on the continent, this powerful gathering will be hosted in Lilongwe, Malawi.
The event extends a warm invitation to former online participants from across Africa, as well as newcomers interested in launching their own prison chess programs. It promises not only competition but also collaboration, inspiration, and shared vision.
🎯 Workshop Goals
To debrief on the outcomes from past online intercontinental chess events, hosted by FIDE and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, including highlighting notable event accomplishments from Africa, and identifying improvement areas.
To introduce the Chess for Freedom program to new African countries and support them with information to be part of the program and share its impact in other countries.
To discuss engagement strategies for potential partners associated with the Chess for Freedom program.

🗓️ Event Schedule
May 11: Arrival of guests and a welcome dinner.
May 12: Full-day workshop with breakout sessions.
May 13: Tour of Maula Prison (men’s and juvenile sections), meeting prison staff, and online Africa Continental Championship.
May 14: Visit Malawi Lake and guest departures.
